There are numerous issues associated with ITR, but people were enthusiastic about the launch of the new Income Tax website; however, they are now encountering several challenges. When dealing with salary schedules, it’s common to encounter technical errors while filing ITR. One such error pops up at Sl. No. 3, where the “”exempt allowance” drop-down can be selected more than once” doesn’t seem to cooperate. Frustrating, right? If you’ve noticed that the Sl. No. 3, where the “”exempt allowance” validation issue, you’re not alone. Sometimes, it’s a simple glitch in the system. Other times, it might be due to user permissions or missing data of claim under section U/S 10 to claim exemption like House Rent Allowance, Travel Concession, Death Claim , Retirement benefit, e.tc.. Whatever the cause of the system glitch, by following step as shown below will help to resolve the problem.
Here are the Steps to Resolve Error “In Schedule Salary at Sl. No. 3 exempt allowance”
- Open you browser and type https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ on the address bar of the browser.
- Now login to the income tax portal with your user name and password.
- Click on the E-file button in case of fresh filing of ITR or click of the Resume filing button shown under dashboard in case of ITR already filled with the information.
- Select the relevant ITR form according to your income source and click on continue button. In my case, I have taken ITR2 form for filling income tax.
- Now you have to click on skip the questions tab as shown under picture and proceed to schedules summary.
- Once you have update all the applicable schedule as per your source of income, now locate the salary schedule and thereafter click on Salary schedule title to open the schedule for edit.
- Now after updating the detail of employer information such as name of the employer, address of the employers, etc. and completing the details of salary income such as basic salary, house rent allowance, leave travel allowance, bonus, other allowance, etc. in salary schedule, thereafter look for “3. Allowances to the extent exempt u/s 10” and click on the title allowances schedule.
- You will see some list of allowance exempted under section 10 of Income Tax Act provided by the Government of India to reduce the taxable income and reduce the tax liability subject to full filling the term and condition to claim the exemptions.
- I have claimed House Rent Allowance of INR 52,200/- which is shown below in the picture

- In exempt allowances, Select those ones which are not applicable or even if the value is 0.
- After selecting and delete the 0 value field by using delete.

Now you are good to go for filling you income tax return and issue will be resolved.
